New Mana Game In The Works?

It looks Square Enix is working on another game in the popular Mana (Seiken Densetsu) series. The most recent entry was Heroes of Mana for Nintendo DS. The new game is for now only indicated by a registered trademark for the title of Circle of Mana. Hopefully Square Enix will go back to the series’ roots of the Action RPG genre. Secret of Mana was one of the best SNES games without question.

First Look At The PC Version Of XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Kotaku has posted an article discussing the PC version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown the upcoming reboot/remake of the original game in X-COM franchise, UFO: Enemy Unknown AKA X-COM: UFO Defense. Screenshots are also shown. The original game is a cult classic to this day and was one of my favorite PC games. There’s something uniquely satisfying about saving the world from alien invaders. Best of all, in the original game you could hack parts of it with a Hex Editor. For example, you could give yourself infinite money or make super soldiers. Hopefully Firaxis will include built in cheat support so you don’t have to do all of that.

G4 Network Rebranding

The G4 Network is rebranding itself in the near future to be more like GQ Magazine according to Kotaku and Variety. Sadly G4 has never really been what I would’ve liked it to be. I think a video game focused network could do well.

There will be plenty more to come as we go on. What are you looking forward to this month? Personally I’m interested in the Wii U event scheduled for next week and the new World of Warcraft expansion, Mists Of Pandaria comes out at the end of the month. And then in the non-gaming world, the Fall TV season will be starting up by the end of this month as well. Thanks for checking out the blog and for any and all comments. New Super Mario Bros. 2 Tops August Sales?

An article on GoNintendo references a PR e-mail from Nintendo in which Nintendo claims that New Super Mario Bros. 2 was #1 for August sales. This is only partially true based on the NPD data. Actually Darksiders II was #1, but that was across 3 platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, & PC). NSMB2 was the top-selling individual SKU for August. But if you were Nintendo you’d probably try to spin it to look that way too. Still #2 is nothing to be ashamed of, considering the game’s only been out a couple of weeks and had only been out a week or so prior to NPD publishing. Nintendo says it sold 240,000 units, I wonder if that is retail only or also includes digital sales?

Here’s the full PR statement via GoNintendo:

Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.
Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.
The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.

“Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. These games have been on the market for more than six months but provide a completely new experience on the larger screens. Combine these titles with the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star and a robust list of third-party games, and Nintendo 3DS is poised to be high on holiday wish lists this year.”
