Gamasutra Interviews Keiji Inafune

Gamasutra has an interview up with Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune about his latest projects, game culture, game development, and more. Here’s part of the interview:

Q: Your Vita game, Soul Sacrifice, is being developed by Marvelous AQL. Do you intend to build a studio that can build games like this internally, or do you want to work with external development partners, primarily?

A: There are things that become easier than I am making it by myself, but I don’t think that will result in the creation of anything new. That’s why I think it’s more interesting if I’m working alongside people who have a different way of thinking about the project than I do. I think that results in something new. I figured it’d be better to work with assorted studios around the world, so I think it’d be great if, in the future, I get to work with more studios besides those just in Japan.

Reggie Fils-Aime Comments On White 3DS XL Not Coming To North America

“We have launched silver- and white-colored GBAs, DSes, DSis, and in our [North American] market they don’t sell very well,” Fils-Aime admitted. “So instead of approaching this lighter-colored product as a mass [product], we’re going to look at the opportunity on a much more limited basis. You might see a limited-time offer with a white or silver 3DS XL, or we might colorize it slightly differently. But in terms of an ongoing SKU, the consumer has responded in our marketplace and said that, for a handheld gaming device from Nintendo, that kind of white or silver doesn’t sell nearly as well as blue or red or even pink.” – Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America President & COO

I must be the exception then. I owned a white GBA, silver original DS (before it died and I had to replace it with the red Mario Kart one), and all my Wii stuff is white, including the system. I think my GBA SP was black though. I never owned the DS Lite or DSi.

Orlando, FL, September 18, 2012 – Indie game studio PixelFoundry, the two man development team formerly from EA Sports, has recently partnered with NVIDIA for their RTS game Blackspace. PixelFoundry co-founder Volga Aksoy says, “With NVIDIA’s support, we will be able to make sure that the game [Blackspace] runs optimally, as well as visually bug free on all existing and future Geforce GPUs. NVIDIA has been surprisingly responsive and helpful to our small studio, its nice to see that level of support from such a large company.” This also means that Blackspace will be able to take full advantage of NVIDIA’s higher-end features like 3D Vision and SLI.

Kickstarting Blackspace

Blackspace also hit Kickstarter earlier today. Creative head and co-founder Jerry Phaneuf says, “Over the past 9 months we think Blackspace has really evolved into something special, we want to share it with the community and see if they agree. This game has the opportunity to become bigger, deeper, and more visually compelling with Kickstarter backing. Coming from larger studios, where your work is necessarily guarded, we are not accustomed to intentionally sharing incomplete visuals, its a bit unnerving. But we’re really excited, and maybe wincing slightly, about the prospect of broad honest feedback from the public, that Kickstarter promises.”
If successful on Kickstarter they plan on expanding the game design. Adding variety not only in content but in game modes and depth as well.

Integrating the Oculus Rift
Blackspace is also going to include the Oculus Rift as part of its development plans. “We implemented stereo 3D in Blackspace quite early in the development, mostly for fun. But now with Nvidia’s support and the emergence of the Rift, we have reason to fully support both Oculous and 3D Vision. A lot is happening for us right now, regardless of what happens with Kickstarter, the future ought to be interesting.” says Phaneuf.

Game development collective aims to shake up the traditional way indie games are made

Melbourne, Australia, Wednesday 19 September, 2012 – Indie game development collective, League of Geeks, today revealed its debut title – Armello – as well as the unorthodox structure behind the development.

Slated for release on tablets in 2013, Armello is a natively-digital multiplayer card and board game set in a fairy-tale animal kingdom. With the King of Armello corrupted and insane, four animal clans compete in a race to claim the crown.

In a break from the traditional indie development model of small groups of developers and low-budget productions, the collective currently has around 15 developers involved, many of whom have numerous years of experience developing on console and PC. The team has also attracted the talents of world-renowned composers and performers and leading lights of the Australian animation industry.

All members of the collective are working for a percentage of the profits in lieu of any upfront payment, made possible due to a strong leadership team and a robust legal framework put in place before development began.

“It sounds crazy but we actually spent the first six months building the right legal and organisational structure,” commented League of Geeks’ Director, Blake Mizzi. “We wanted to do something really ambitious without taking on conventional investment and restricting our freedom. It was critical to get the setup watertight so developers would have confidence in it and it wouldn’t all fall apart if there were any disputes or someone left.”

Director Trent Kusters added “Since then, we’ve been able to attract an amazingly talented group of people who have been inspired by the vision for both the game and what we’re hoping will be a new model for enabling indie developers to tackle more ambitious projects. We want to be very open along the way and plan on providing our model to any other indie developers out there that want to follow our approach.”

Aiming to push the boundaries of digital board games, Armello will be completely 3D, with beautifully animated visuals, an expansive meta-game and vast amounts of content. Boasting AAA production values, it will be free to play, with an economy model based on core free-to-play games such as League of Legends.

Eighteen months since LoG’s inception, and twelve months into development, the collective has already won some early support, receiving funding from both Screen Australia and Film Victoria to expand the scope of the project and cover some of its non-development costs.
