Windows 8 – Mini-Review & Thoughts

While I was at Best Buy today checking out Wii U, I also tried out Windows 8. I demoed both the tablet & desktop versions. Going into it I was pretty skeptical about this complete redesign of Windows. I was used to the Classic mode and I thought “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Well to my surprise, this new tablet-focused version worked pretty well. It’s definitely a natural fit for a tablet and works well on that. The desktop version works better than I thought it would, but I’m still not 100% sold on it. If you don’t have a touchscreen display, you have to use the mouse which feels somewhat awkward, but I imagine it will work better with a higher sensitivity mouse. You can easily switch to Desktop (Classic) mode as well, though I thought it was not that intuitive how to switch out of an app. You’re supposed to hit the Windows key apparently. I’d like to see how actual games run on it before I make a firm opinion on it. But overall so far it seems like it might be decent after all. I still prefer the Classic mode but I guess that’s just because I’m used to it. I still wouldn’t upgrade to it just yet though personally. Windows always has bugs with the OS itself or drivers or both after release. It’s generally better to wait until a year or 2 after it’s been out to upgrade. Plus Windows 7 works fine for me now and I’m used to it and like it as much as XP, maybe more.

Wii U & Rayman Legends Demo – Mini-Review & Thoughts

Today I stopped by Best Buy and to see if they had a Wii U Demo Station set up yet and they did so I got to play the system for the first time. The only playable game was Rayman Legends which is an odd choice since that game won’t be out at launch supposedly. It was okay. Nothing too special. I’m not a big Rayman fan anyways. I thought it odd that you don’t normally play as Rayman in the demo, despite it being a Rayman game. You’re playing as some chick instead. The GamePad was sturdy and light enough to feel like a regular controller basically and fit comfortably. I did find it somewhat awkward to switch from looking at the TV to the GamePad screen, but that might just take some getting used to. It looks like it’ll be cool once they release some games I’m interested in.

There was one part in the Rayman demo where you had to twist the GamePad to maneuver Rayman through a spike wheel type thing and that was pretty challenging at first since you don’t control him directly. He moves automatically along whatever path you set for him using the GamePad’s gyroscope sensors. I’ve never been a big fan of games where if you get hit once you die, and this is one of those games unfortunately. It’s basically a matter of trial and error. It did have various checkpoints as you progressed through the stages but these were not readily identifiable. In the part where you had to guide Rayman, you were also using the touch screen to control some little flying dude to move various objects and attack/impede enemies. It reminded me of the Tingle Tuner function from Wind Waker.

The Wii U itself feels a lot like a mash-up of the DS & Wii. I didn’t get to check out the console specific stuff, like channels or anything like that. I didn’t even think about it til I left as the demo is timed for only 12 minutes and will reset when you hit the limit. Overall I was not too terribly impressed. It was somewhat fun, but not $350 worth of fun. And again, Rayman Legends was not a good choice for a playable demo IMO. It should’ve had more than 1 game playable as well. Put New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Assassin’s Creed III, ZombiU, and maybe something else on there and you have what would make a good demo I think. Oh well. Maybe they will put other demos closer to launch or after it.

Xbox Surface Tablet – Logo & Details

xbox surface tablet logo Xbox Surface Tablet Logo & Details

Here’s some interesting news. It looks like Microsoft is working on a gaming tablet in their newly released Surface tablet line. This will seemingly combine the Xbox and Surface brands into one device. One would assume that they will be including Xbox Live/Arcade functionality, since it’s being built as a gaming tablet. Here’s the details from AllGamesBeta:

“Microsoft is building its own 7-inch gaming tablet. Multiple sources familiar with plans within Redmond have confirmed to The Verge that initial hardware planning for an Xbox Surface is underway. Specifications for an Xbox Surface 7-inch tablet computing device leaked back in June ahead of Microsoft’s Surface RT and Surface Pro announcement. We’re told that the initial specs were accurate and that the final implementation is being worked on.

The Xbox Surface will likely include a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM designed specifically for gaming tasks. We’re told these specifications could be altered to accommodate an unannounced Intel SoC and that the Xbox Surface is being developed independent of specific hardware architecture. Microsoft’s Xbox Surface won’t run a full version of Windows, rather this 7-inch tablet will run a custom Windows kernel. Messaging and other tablet functions may be supported, but the focus is on gaming.”

On every straight, hairpin and jump, players will experience F1 Race Stars’ unique brand of superfast Formula One racing as they race through a Bavarian castle, accelerate on the autobahn and fly through a forest.

The F1 Race Stars demo will be available for download today for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in Europe and North America. The demo will then be available from Steam for Windows PC worldwide and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system in Europe on Wednesday, November 7th; the demo will arrive for PlayStation 3 in North America on Tuesday, November 13th.

In the demo players can race as Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel or Kimi Räikkönen and compete with other official and fictional Formula One drivers, transformed into heroic caricatures that are bursting with personality.

In the sprint for the chequered flag, gamers can utilise a range of fantasy and Formula One themed power-ups, from calling in Wet Weather to slow the pack, deploying DRS to speed past rivals and using a range of sneaky bubbles to trap other drivers. If their car takes damage, gamers can race through the pit lane to get back up to speed, whilst a variety of different routes, boost pads and shortcuts will all slingshot players ahead.”
