Nintendo’s Big Problem – CNN Money Article

nintendo logo Nintendos Big Problem CNN Money Article

CNN Money writer Adrian Covert has posted an article which basically says Nintendo is clueless and is behind the times. Apparently this writer didn’t do a whole lot of research on this topic because there are several factual errors and misleading statements throughout the article (such as ignoring the fact that DLC and subscription services are very popular on competing platforms, saying PlayStation was Sony’s top console in 2001 (PS2 released in 2000), bashing the Wiiware service for lack of titles on it despite the fact that Wii U came out in 2012 (albeit late 2012) and thus the Wii was no longer the primary focus of developers, and more).

They also seem to have a different definition of “badly missing” than I do when they claim 3.45 million is a huge difference from 4 million. Is 550,000 units a lot? Yes, but it’s only 13.8% of the total. So it’s not “badly missing” in my opinion. Badly would be something 2 million+ off. Lots of sales forecasters would love be that close to an estimate I’m sure. You see forecasts all the time where they say yeah we’re going to sell 50 million units or something ridiculous like that and then they only do 1-2 million and they act surprised/shocked/disappointed. Of course that’s going to happen when you over-inflate forecasts. Is it good that Nintendo missed their forecast? No, of course not, but it’s not quite the dire situation implied by CNN Money.

No the Wii U is not selling like hotcakes, but Nintendo still has time to right the ship. They did it with 3DS despite what this writer has claimed (3DS has already outsold several systems that were on the market far longer).

If you want to read the article, check out the CNN Money link below. Be warned though if you’re a Nintendo fan you’ll likely be scratching your head and annoyed by what they have to say.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate – Sound Designer Interview

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate logo Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Sound Designer Interview

Capcom has posted an interview with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Sound Designer [name]. Here is part of the interview:

“DJ Sandou (interviewer): Hello. To begin: what was your role in the game Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate?

Sound Desinger (interviewee): Hello, there. Thank you very much for having me for this interview. The main role I held in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was as a sound designer. I worked largely to create better quality sound effects (re-sampling, etc.), as well as brand new sound effects. I also mixed the background music and ambience into surround-sound. As you know, the Wii U has a unique gamepad named Wii U Game Pad, so coming up with ways to integrate the audio and the gamepad in a complimentary way was also part of my job.”

Iwata Asks – Bravely Default Vol. 1 As Translated By A Fan

iwata asks japanese logo Iwata Asks Bravely Default Vol. 1 As Translated By A Fan

Nintendo President & CEO Satoru Iwata has conducted another Iwata Asks, this time with the creators of Silicon Studio’s & Square Enix’s 3DS RPG Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. This is part 1 of a fan translation. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m stoked this game is getting localized. I’m looking forward to it, being a big 16-bit era RPG fan (which this game reminds me of). Anyways, here’s part of the Iwata Asks translation as seen on KameDaniRyuu’s Tumblr:

“Iwata: Today I am going to ask about Bravely Default, a new fantasy RPG from Square Enix. Compared to before, the challenges facing creating a new fantasy RPG are far greater so I’d also like to discuss how you overcame those challenges. To begin, may I ask you to introduce yourselves and tell us how you first became involved with video games?

Asano: Of course. My name is Tomoya Asano and I am the game’s producer. My experience goes right back to the time of the Famicom when I first encountered it as a third or fourth grader.”

Assassin’s Creed Designer Gone From Ubisoft

patrice desilets Assassins Creed Designer Gone From Ubisoft

According to Kotaku, Assassin’s Creed Designer Patrice Desilets is saying he was fired by Ubisoft. Desilets says he did not leave voluntarily as Ubisoft seemed to imply. He was formerly working for THQ Montreal on a game called 1666. Ubisoft acquired the studio in January (which was likely related to THQ’s financial problems they were having). The game’s status is up in the air as Ubisoft refused to comment about it. Kotaku says they’ve heard it was suspended. Desilets put a full statement about the situation as seen on Kotaku:

“Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft. I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.

This was not my decision.

Ubisoft’s actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game.” – Patrice Desilets as seen on Kotaku

Random Game Fact – Meta Knight the Butterfly?

I think the red coloring could’ve worked for Meta Knight, but I think we can all agree the bat-like wings look far more intimidating than the butterfly ones as seen in this image from DidYouKnow Gaming:
