Wow, that’s pretty crazy. You’ve got to really love your job to spend that much time on the same little thing for 2 full years. I guess they really wanted to make sure they got it looking right and working right within the game. That’s some dedication. It’s no wonder the game got such good reviews when the staff puts in effort like that.

Top Storitorial – Final Next Xbox Thoughts Before The Reveal

next xbox reveal event banner Top Storitorial Final Next Xbox Thoughts Before The Reveal

Well we’ve been waiting a long time for this day and it’s finally upon us. Microsoft will reveal their third console, the so-called Next Xbox this afternoon. We already know some games that will be shown including Call of Duty: Ghosts and a next-gen FIFA, possibly FIFA 14. There’s also rumors that Respawn Entertainment’s title will make an appearance along with the recent rumor of a new Forza game. Microsoft has said that this event will focus mainly on hardware. They are planning to use E3 to discuss software apparently. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see any games.

I hope they will give us a date and price and maybe a few of the launch titles as well. I’d also like to see the controller and the console itself. I think we won’t get all of that, probably just the console or just the controller, and probably no date or price other than a vague Holiday 2013. I’m going to guess the system will release in early-mid November. No inside information there, just speculation on my part. Side note: I think the PS4 will release around the same time, possibly within 1-2 weeks of the Next Xbox.

I’m guessing the console will be rectangular shaped like the Xbox and Xbox 360 were, as that would make sense given Microsoft’s track record and the fact that Xbox’s are basically console versions of PCs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some angular features like the S Model has. I expect HDMI to be the standard graphical output and for it to have built-in Wi-FI along with an Ethernet out port. It will probably have 2-4 USB ports as well. I’m assuming they will include a hard drive of some sort as well. Probably another proprietary style one, though one would assume they would allow USB drives as well given that they do that with the Xbox 360 now. It’s conceivable however, that this feature won’t be available at launch. I expect the Next Xbox to use a most likely proprietary high-density DVD, possibly quadruple or quintuple layer. I don’t expect them to use Blu-Ray given that that is Sony’s format and I’m sure they don’t want to pay the licensing costs. And of course HD-DVD flopped so that is out as well.

I also expect Microsoft to do something similar to what Nintendo does with the Wii U eShop in that I expect Microsoft will do same-day or close to it digital releases of their newest retail titles. Digital downloads are becoming a larger and larger segment of the console marketplace and Microsoft has shown they are not afraid to embrace Internet features in their consoles. Speaking of which, obviously Xbox Live will play a big role in the new system. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the layout being similar to Windows 8. I’m sure we’ll have Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, ESPN, and all the other media features on the system as well. I expect the controllers will be wireless once again, probably using rechargeable proprietary batteries instead of AAs. I would hope they would include a charger in the box if that is the case.

I don’t think we’ll see a Halo game at launch. I think they will save that for Holiday 2014. Halo 4 just came out last holiday, so unless they were working on Halo 5 at the same time, it wouldn’t be ready in time more than likely. I think the system will feature Kinect integration of some sort, possibly built into the console itself.  As such I think they will have a selection of Kinect-enabled games as launch titles. I also believe Fable 4 is in development for the system and might possibly be a launch title, but more likely it won’t be due to Fable: The Journey releasing just last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re discussing bringing a new Gears of War game to the system as well, but I don’t think we’ll see it until 2014, possibly not until 2015.

Launch titles I’m predicting so far are: Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, and Grand Theft Auto V. The only 2 of those that are essentially confirmed are Call of Duty: Ghosts and FIFA 14, but the others wouldn’t surprise me even though they are speculation on my part.  What good is a new system reveal if you don’t make predictions right?

Well that about wraps up my thoughts on the system leading into the final hours before the reveal event. Which of my predictions will come true? We’ll find out later today hopefully. Be sure to check back around 1 PM Eastern time for our live blog coverage of the event. What do you guys think will happen with the system? What are you wanting to see with it? Let us know in the comments.

Free PS3 & PSV Games

Germinator (PS Vita) – $9.99 (Free for PS Plus Members)

“Germinator twists the bubble genre, wiping away old school match-three games. Crash germ bubbles into those of the same color. Combine and grow them until they explode in a splattering goop. Trigger power-ups to pop them all and mess up the screen. Timing and accuracy are the keys to solving puzzles and preventing the germs from rising too high. It’s a great title for all ages, and will be downloadable free in PlayStation Plus later this month.” - Morgan Haro, PlayStation Blog
