Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai recently discussed a few details about Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in Weekly Famitsu. He mentions that the games will not feature a Story Mode like Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He also says cutscenes will be absent from the games as well. Why? Sakurai-san mentions that the main reason is because videos were soon uploaded on the Internet which spoiled all of this and took away from the game and its impact in his opinion. He goes on to state that instead of making these kinds of videos he decided they would make character introduction type videos for new characters like the ones seen for the Villager, Mega Man, and the Wii Fit Trainer. Apparently the 3DS version will be getting some sort of different mode which is not the same as the standard fighting mode but also not a story mode. He didn’t provide further details about this as of yet.
Sakurai-san talked briefly about the differences between the two versions and mentioned that each would have different stages. He said the 3DS version would have stages which were themed around portable games while the Wii U version would have console-themed stages. It’s unknown whether all stages will be different or just some of them.
As had been mentioned previously, Sakurai-san re-confirmed some sort of character customization feature for the games. It is said to effect your character’s performance in some way though how exactly that will occur remains unexplained. He also stated that he is thinking about allowing 3DS customizations to be used on the Wii U version.
Hmm well it looks Rare made the right decision then. Diddy Kong has been in numerous games since DKC whereas Donkey Kong Jr.’s last appearance was in 2000’s Mario Tennis on the N64. I personally like Diddy Kong better though Jr. is okay as well. Who knows, maybe Jr. will return as a playable character again one day?
