Welcome to GameSaga’s full recap of the North American Nintendo Direct event for December 18th, 2013. If you missed it, you can check out the full video below or if you’d prefer, you can read our text recap below that. As with any event like this, spoilers about game contents are inevitable. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read/watch this post/video.

Direct Link

  • We start off with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata
  • First game shown is a brand new title never before seen or talked about until today as far as I know, it’s called Hyrule Warriors and is a sort of crossover of Zelda & Tecmo Koei’s -Warriors series
  • Game looks gorgeous and has a remixed rock version of the Zelda theme
  • We see Hyrule Field and Hyrule Castle off in the distance
  • Link is sporting an altered outfit with a scarf or something similar around his neck
  • He has what appear to be a generic sword and shield, not the Master Sword and Hylian Shield
  • Link is shown fighting hordes of Bokoblins
  • He has many of the same moves from previous Zelda games
  • A magic meter (or perhaps stamina or both) is shown along with bombs and the traditional hearts for a life gauge
  • There is also another meter shown which is horizontal and close to empty in the video, unknown function so far
  • It appears it might be a power meter that fills up when you kill lots of enemies, perhaps functioning like a special move metere in fighting games or the like
  • Link can throw multiple bombs in rapid succession at the same time
  • Spin attack is in the game
  • Lizalfos are shown along with red potions
  • Sound effects when fighting the Lizalfos are the same or similar as in previous Zelda games
  • Link appears to be able to do a charged forward strike, perhaps similar to the Skyward Strike from Skyward Sword?
  • Heart consumables are still dropped
  • A rod-like item is shown being used but not being selected in the HUD, perhaps a Fire Rod type item?
  • That’s certainly what it looks like
  • A huge Dodongo is shown. He stomps and knocks Bokoblins and apparently generic knights to the ground
  • The Dodongo has a charged fireball like projectile it fires and can roll to crush you
  • It appears Link can execute a super-charged attack when the unknown (power?) meter is full
  • This bathes the enemies in gold light and he raises his sword towards the sky not unlike Skyward Sword and slices through the enemies a few times and sends them flying
  • We then see Link opening a treasure chest which are now red & gold
  • The usual Zelda chest jingle sound plays
  • No item is shown as being found, but rather it displays a simple text logo saying Hyrule Warriors (name not final)
  • We’re back to Iwata-san now
  • He clarifies that this new Zelda game is NOT Zelda U, but an all-new game for Wii U
  • No specific release date is given other than 2014. My gut feeling puts this as November-December title, but that’s just speculation on my part
  • Next up is Kirby Triple Deluxe, the new Kirby game for 3DS
  • This is a previously announced title
  • We see Kirby sliding through some blocks
  • He still can inhale enemies and steal their powers, like the Sword power which turns Kirby into Kirby Link complete with his own Master Sword
  • Warp Stars return and these can transport you to the background of the stage
  • Enemies can appear from the background as well and attack Kirby even when he is in the foreground
  • A spear/javelin like power-up is shown
  • A whip power-up is as well with an Indiana Jones like hat for the pink hero
  • An ice or perhaps electric power is shown
  • A new feature in Kirby Triple Deluxe is an ability called Hyper Nova (?)
  • This can only be used at certain times and is powerful enough to allow Kirby to uproot full-grown trees
  • This allows him to suck up everything in the way
  • A leaf power is shown which appears somewhat similar to Wood Man’s power from Mega Man 2
  • The wheel power is shown
  • Rock Kirby is shown as some sort of statue which resembles DoDrio (from Pokémon) somewhat
  • An umbrella power is shown
  • Over 20 different Copy abilities in the game (this includes new abilities for KTD only)
  • A bug like power is shown which resembles Heracross (from Pokémon)
  • A bell power is shown
  • A cloud boss is shown
  • A tent/circus/ball type power is shown
  • A bow & arrow power is shown
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe will have 2 additional modes besides the main adventure mode
  • Kirby Fighters is one of these modes
  • You can choose from 1 of 10 Copy Abilities to determine which is the best
  • Gameplay seems partially inspired by the Smash Bros. series
  • Supports up to 4 players
  • Can also be played single-player
  • The other mode is Dedede’s Drum Dash staring King Dedede complete with the classic Kirby theme
  • This is a rhythm type game
  • You have to press buttons in synch with the music while jumping along drums, collecting coins, and avoiding enemies
  • There will be several different Kirby themes to play with
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe is scheduled for a 2014 release. Like Hyrule Warriors, no specific date was given
  • Now we are shown footage of the Wii U Virtual Console version of Super Mario World
  • Next game up is Yoshi’s New Island
  • Takashi Tezuka returns for Yoshi’s New Island who was Creative Director on the SNES title
  • A trailer is shown for the game which as you would expect features Yoshi with Baby Mario
  • Similar gameplay to previous Yoshi’s Island games, use Yoshi’s tongue to eat enemies and turn them into eggs, throw eggs at things
  • New to this game are giant enemies which you apparently have to rapidly press the tongue button to eat and convert them into giant eggs
  • These giant eggs can bust through pipes and other pieces of the level
  • Flowers return as well
  • Shy Guys, a penguin like enemy, and Koopa Troopas are shown
  • Yoshi’s New Island is scheduled for Spring 2014
  • Next up is a brand new title, never before seen (to my knowledge) for the 3DS eShop, a new game in the Chibi-Robo series
  • It’s called Chibi-Robo: Photo Finder
  • We see Chibi exploring and he lands on the desk of a museum curator
  • Your objective is to help the museum
  • He tasks you with collecting NostalJunk which are objects surrounding the player in real life
  • This will be accomplished through the use a Silhouette capture feature
  • Chibi uses a special in-game camera and this will give you an outline of the object you need to take a picture of
  • This object becomes NostalJunk and is imported into the game
  • This allows the curator to add the objects to the museum
  • The game will feature other eccentric characters like a squid looking thing, a super hero type character, & “singing sponge bears”
  • These characters will provide Chibi-Robo with tasks to perform like cleaning a room or defeating enemies
  • Completing these tasks will allow you to proceed further with finding more photos
  • A couple of characters resembling ketchup & mustard bottles are shown
  • Chibi will have to re-charge his batteries (referred to as Watts in the game) from time to time
  • The game will also have community events called NostalJunk Challenges
  • This will task players with taking photos of specific silhouette objects
  • This may potentially unlock a new outfit for Chibi-Robo
  • Unlike the other games shown so far, Chibi-Robo: Photo Finder is just around the corner, releasing on January 9th on the 3DS eShop along with a demo version as well
  • NostalJunk Challenges are to being shortly after release of the game and are available to all players who own the full version
  • More info is available at chibirobo.nintendo.com
  • Next up is info on Pokémon Bank & Poké Transporter which both have been previously announced
  • Both are compatible with Pokémon X & Y only
  • Can store up to 3,000 Pokémon from X & Y
  • Poké Transporter allows you to transfer Pokémon from Black, White, Black 2, & White 2 into X & Y
  • Both applications are scheduled for release on December 27th
  • A free 30-day trial version will be available from launch until January 31st
  • Celebi will be offered as a special gift if you access Pokémon Bank by September 30th, 2014
  • Iwata-san bids us farewell for now and we go to Reggie Fils-Aime, President & COO of Nintendo of America
  • A couple of neat things in the background in what I’m guessing is Reggie’s office or perhaps a conference room, there is a gray/black Link statue along with Christmas Tree with a Starman as the tree topper
  • Up next is Bravely Default for 3DS
  • Obviously this title is previously announced. The version we’re getting in North America is based on Bravely Default: For the Sequel
  • Sleep Points are being discussed which you can earn by putting your 3DS in Sleep Mode or by paying a fee to purchase them 3 at a time
  • You get 1 Sleep Point for every 8 hours (non-consecutive) the 3DS is closed while the game is running
  • You’re limited to a maximum of 3 Sleep Points at a time
  • These can be used to swap for better equipment, revive allies, heal, or used for extra damage in battle
  • Bravely Default will incorporate StreetPass
  • This will gather summonable allies to aid you in battle
  • As mentioned above, you can buy Sleep Drinks (for real money) which give you 3 Sleep Points instantly
  • These are according to Reggie completely optional and you can acquire Sleep Points through just playing the game
  • Bravely Default is scheduled to be released on February 7th
  • A demo for the game will be available sometime in January
  • This demo is free and unlike most demos, it is not part of the main game, but rather a side story exclusive to the demo
  • Players can earn item packs which can be transferred into the full version
  • The demo will support up to 20 StreetPass tags and these can be transferred to the full version along with 3DS friends
  • The demo is scheduled to be released on January 2nd
  • That’s all from Reggie and we are waved at by someone dressed up as Reggie’s Mii
  • We’re back with Iwata-san now
  • Up next is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • We see a trailer for the game
  • The Kongs are enjoying a banana cake which appears to be some type of birthday cake
  • But Donkey Kong cannot make a wish as the candle is extinguished by a snowflake
  • DK Island has been invaded by the Viking-like enemies called the Snowma
  • Dixie Kong is a playable character in this game (she was absent from DKCR)
  • We then see Diddy Kong as well, along with his jet pack
  • Well that was different. The video was rewound and we’re back to the beginning with Cranky Kong shown
  • As previously revealed by Amazon & at VGX, Cranky Kong is the 4th playable character
  • This is Cranky’s first playable appearance in a DK platformer
  • Cranky’s moveset takes a lot of inspiration from Scrooge in DuckTales
  • Cranky can bounce across spikes and on enemies and up to higher ledges with his cane
  • The Kong Pow ability is mentioned and shown briefly, this is a special move when collect 100 bananas
  • This turns all enemies on-screen into items
  • 6 distinct islands
  • The game is scheduled to be released on February 21st (after several delays)
  • Next up is news about Sonic Lost World (already released)
  • Sonic Lost World will soon receive new DLC for the Wii U version only
  • This DLC will add a level based on Yoshi’s Island, called Yoshi’s Island Zone (man is it surreal or what to see Sonic exploring a stage based on a Mario game)
  • This stage will feature coins, pipes, Shy Guys, Piranha Plants, Sonic loop-de-loops, eggs, and more
  • This DLC is available as of today on the Wii U eShop for free
  • The other DLC is not being shown today, but Iwata hints that it is Zelda related
  • Wii Sports Club is up next, the revamped version of Wii Sports for Wii U
  • Golf is being added to the line up as of today
  • This was an early example of asymmetric gameplay when Wii U was first shown
  • The main content will be shown on the TV while you have your GamePad on the floor and you can look down at it to see a close up of your golf ball (you swing the club with the Wii Remote)
  • This version of Golf will have the Wii course along with a new course based on Golf for Famicom (called Golf US Course)
  • Iwata-san says a 24 hour free trial will be offered alongside this new addition to Wii Sports Club
  • You can even take advantage of the free trial even if you already used the previous trial of Wii Sports Club
  • Wii Sports Club will now be automatically downloaded to your Wii U if you have the October system update and have enough storage space
  • Next up is a “new” title, never before seen to my knowledge
  • We see an 8-bit classic Donkey Kong level but instead of Mario, it’s 8-bit Link climbing through the stage
  • Next we see 8-bit Super Mario Bros. World 1-2, but it’s been mirrored (flipped backwards)
  • This is a downloadable game for Wii U called NES Remix
  • This game will feature scenes from: Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Golf, Clu Clu Land, Wrecking Crew (!), Donkey Kong Jr., Pinball, Donkey Kong 3, Baseball, Urban Champion, & Tennis
  • That’s 16 different games in total that are featured in some fashion
  • We see Link in Donkey Kong again and then we see Excitebike but only your rider and a small path in front of you is visible
  • In another Super Mario Bros. scene, Mario fights a giant sized 8-bit Bowser
  • These elements are called Remix Stages
  • There are also levels which are mostly the same as their 8-bit original counterparts
  • These highlight some of the best parts of the games and have new challenges which are called NES Stages
  • Taking a page out of Super Mario 3D World, NES Remix will feature Stamps that you can earn/collect (it even has what looks like the exact same stamp icon as SM3DW)
  • NES Remix will be compatible with Miiverse as well
  • These stamps will be 8-bit stamps
  • Can post your record and clear time from each stage when posting within the game
  • NES Remix is available as of today
  • Next is Luigi news
  • We see footage of Dr. Mario Online RX from the WiiWare service
  • Dr. Luigi is a new title/spin off of Dr. Mario
  • There will be a new mode with L-shaped pills which act like 2 capsules in 1
  • These pills will have 3 of the same color in the vertical direction
  • This will change once you increase the difficulty
  • Dr. Luigi will have multiplayer
  • Instead of sending garbage pills to the other player when you get a combo, this will trigger a color change on the other player’s next capsule
  • Traditional mode will be available as well and this mode also allows for online play
  • Virus Buster mode (seen previously in Brain Age) is included as well
  • This allows you to play the game on the touchscreen of the Wii U GamePad
  • Dr. Luigi is scheduled for release on December 31st
  • A Year of Luigi/Luigi’s Mansion statue/figure is shown that according to Iwata-san will be offered through Club Nintendo
  • Next we see Kirby floating through space on a star
  • Then we see Mario, Donkey Kong, Bowser, & Luigi on a Rainbow Road like stage (man these are some breathtaking graphics shown)
  • Kirby shows up here as well, perhaps he will be playable in Mario Kart 8?
  • Kirby blasts through a Star Gate (similar to the ones from Mario Galaxy) and crashes into the Rainbow Road course
  • A Luma is seen shooting down to investigate
  • The Luma wakes Kirby up
  • Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Peach, & Bowser show up on their Karts
  • DK pokes Kirby for some reason
  • Rosalina appears out of nowhere
  • Rosalina & Luma are announced as additions to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS! Which marks the first playable appearance of either character in a Smash Bros. game
  • We see her bouncing around the previously announced Super Mario Galaxy stage
  • She fires Luma off like a projectile
  • She is then fighting the Villager on the Mega Man stage
  • A brief glimpse at a possible Pilotwings stage
  • They are fighting Mario & Luigi on a reactor looking stage
  • Then we see them with Olimar/Pikmin & Luigi
  • DK is trying to carry Rosalina off and Luma appears out of thin air to attack him
  • Now we see what looks like a possible Punch Out stage?
  • They are fighting Samus on a Kid Icarus looking stage
  • Back to the Galaxy stage with Mega Man & Bowser
  • A very brief glimpse is shown of a greenery looking stage, which looks somewhat similar to Sonic Lost World
  • Another look at the KI stage
  • We see Rosalina & Luma fighting Link on what appears to be a Pikmin stage
  • Now fighting Fox on the Mega Man stage
  • Back to the Galaxy stage briefly
  • Fighting against Marth possibly on the KI stage
  • Now against Mario in the reactor stage. Mario has FLUDD again
  • Toon Link & Rosalina on a Skyward Sword looking stage
  • Luma beating up a tree on a possible Wii Fit stage (Trainer in background)
  • Back to the reactor stage this time with Pit
  • Different scene from the Skyward Sword stage with the Villager trying to catch Luma with his net
  • Back to the Galaxy stage
  • A glamor shot of the logo
  • Back to the Rainbow Road/Mario Kart 8 teaser
  • Back to Iwata-san now
  • Now we’re on to a proper trailer for Mario Kart 8
  • We’re shown an airport stage
  • Baby Mario, Wario, Donkey Kong, Waluigi, Bowser, Peach, Baby Peach, Baby Luigi, Luigi, Baby Daisy, Mario, & Yoshi all appear
  • We then go inside the airport (previously we were on the tarmac with a plane)
  • This is called Sunshine Airport
  • Character specific vehicles appear to have returned
  • Hang gliders return
  • The previously announced hover mechanic is shown
  • The baby characters appear to have insect like karts
  • A temple like stage is shown with a giant rolling stone wheel and Thwomps
  • We see a canyon/desert type stage
  • A cloud stage
  • Rosalina is playable
  • You go inside the clouds and see lightning
  • And we go back outside again (this level also features beanstalks)
  • Mario Kart 8 is scheduled to be released in Spring 2014
  • Back to Iwata-san again
  • Iwata thanks us for watching and bids us happy holidays and we’re off to a photo montage Reggie mentioned earlier along with various video footage of people playing Wii U & 3DS. These appear to be from the meet-ups Reggie did recently
  • In an epic showing of strength, Reggie is shown defeating his Mii in arm wrestling
  • And that’s the end of the video!
  • We’ll have expanded thoughts on everything shown later on today, along with trailers from the various games shown and any other content that we can find
  • Thanks for reading!
