Welcome back to GameSaga’s Weekly Smash Up, our weekly feature where we review the screenshots of Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS & Wii U that Masahiro Sakurai has posted on the Smash Bros. Miiverse Community from the past week. For the week of July 7th, our first screenshot examines an attack used by the Mii Gunner. It will have the longest reach of all side smash attacks according to Sakurai-san, but apparently some characters, like Kirby for example, can duck underneath it.

Our next screen shows us another long distance attack, this time it’s Palutena’s up smash attack which appears to fire a beam of light in an upward direction, similar to Pikachu’s Thunder ability from previous games.

Speaking of Palutena, she appears in the next screen this week with a look at her Heavenly Light ability. This looks like it will create a massive faint pillar of light damaging anyone unlucky enough to be caught in it. But according to Sakurai, this attack is no-flinch. What does that mean? It simply means that you do not react to damage, i.e. you won’t be knocked backwards from this attack, but you will still incur damage.

Moving on, we see the Dark Emperor from Find Mii 2 in our next screenshot. We also see a Mii Fighter and a female Villager. The Mii has on a Mii Force Helmet which seemingly indicates that Mii’s will be able to have accessories as part of their appearance. The Dark Emperor will cause status changes depending on your character’s color. Red ones get stronger usually for example.

The next screen shows us a couple of alternate costumes. One for Samus and one for Mario. Samus is wearing her Light Suit which was first seen in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Mario meanwhile, is wearing a patriotic looking outfit from NES Open Tournament Golf AKA Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course in Japan.

Sakurai then shows off a taunt move from Pac-Man. This is his up taunt and it’s called Namco Roulette. This will cause random Namco characters to appear when used, specifically ones from the 1980s era of Namco games.

The next screenshot and the last of the week shows off other various Namco characters that will appear as part of this taunt ability.

We wrap up this week with not a screenshot, but rather an announcement. Masahiro Sakurai posted that the team will be announcing a new character during a live stream event on the official website. This will take place at 10:00 AM Eastern on July 10th, 2014 and will be broadcast on the Nintendo YouTube channel as well. We’ve embedded the video that is going to be the live stream (on Monday) below. We’re also planning to do live blog coverage of the reveal starting around 10:00 AM Eastern on Monday, July 14th. So get ready to throw down with a new challenger!
